My name is John Schets, 61 years old, born in Breda, a city in the south of the Netherlands.
Fly tying, fly fishing and casting has been my great passion for more than 20 years. I like to fish for pike and perch in the Netherlands and for trout and grayling in the countries around the Netherlands. My most favourite fishing is salmon fishing in Scotland and Norway. Travelling with friends is very valuable. That is how I came into contact with tying the classic patterns that are my favourite.
I am regularly asked to demonstrate classic fly tying at various fairs. This has brought me a lot of friendship with tyers with the same passion. I was and am a guest at the Dutch fly fair before, a super fun and beautiful happening in my own country. The annual British, the Irish fly fair and the Belgian fly fair, not to forget, I always look forward to this, always fun in a good atmosphere.
The crowning glory of my work last year was the invitation to the international fly fair, the ASFI in Calgary, Canada in September. A fair only and especially for the classic salmon flies, I felt honored to be the only Dutchman to join. I felt the same honor last February in Kelso Scotland at the opening of the river Tweed where I was invited with 2 other tyers to pay homage to the tying of the classic salmon fly in the beautiful town hall there. Again met beautiful people with the same love for the classic salmon fly and made agreements to go fishing together on the river Tweed this summer. Of course I am committed to making a nice contribution everywhere and to pass on fly tying to other enthusiastic tyers so that the craft is not lost. I do this with a lot of passion and pleasure, which makes them real win-win events.
